SMSC & British Values

Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural  development at Broadoak

At Broadoak, we foster values of courtesy, consideration and individual responsibility. We encourage in all students a sense of responsibility to themselves, to the College community and to the outside world.  We place great focus on students’ wider spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, including their understanding and appreciation of fundamental British values.  Each term we have a whole College focus for assemblies and reflection time; this is facilitated by a weekly ‘Thought for the Week’.

Term 1  Personal Best (rule of laws)

  • willingness to participate in and respond positively to artistic, sporting and cultural opportunities
  • sense of enjoyment and fascination in learning about themselves, others and the world around them

Term 5 Respect and Tolerance

  •  interest in exploring, improving understanding of and showing respect for different faiths and cultural diversity
  •  respect and celebrate diversity, as shown by their tolerance and attitudes towards different religious, ethnic and socio-economic groups in the local, national and global communities

Term 6 Our National Community

  • understanding and appreciation of the wide range of cultural influences that have shaped their own heritage and that of others
  • understanding and appreciation of the range of different cultures within school and further afield as an essential element of their preparation for life in modern Britain

Students are also encouraged to become active citizens, reflecting the values of democracy and mutual respect and tolerance.  This includes elections for the year and school councils, as well as for Head Boy and Head Girl.  Each year group organises an annual charity week, in which all students are encouraged to actively participate to raise money for local and national charities.
