One World Week 2017

Miss Evans and the MFL department are delighted to report that 2017’s One World Week was a fantastic success! There was a wide range of activities taking place to celebrate our different cultures, languages and diversity. This year’s theme was “Hope” and was the central theme for our poetry competition and the teacher’s Great Broadoak Bake Off. Miss Harvey won the award for best tasting cake and Miss Jenkins won the most votes for best presentation.

In PSHCE lessons, we learnt about the importance of access to clean water and sanitation and we created a paper chain full of messages of Hope for the future. This paper chain has been displayed in the Centre of Excellence for everyone to see.

On Thursday, Year 7 and 8 took part in One World Day, where we learnt about African drumming, the Paralympics, migration, rockets, making water filters, Greek, Welsh, Muslim tessellations, French crepe making and a successful poetry slam was conducted in the English department.

“It was a great opportunity to learn about other countries”, “It was good to learn about how clean water saves lives” and “I enjoyed learning about a range of cultures” were some of the positive comments students gave about their experiences during One World Week. The Paralympics’ seated volleyball and Mr Knight’s French sessions were particularly highly rated activities! Most students’ only complaint was that they wanted to learn more languages!
