Free School Meals

Is my child entitled to free school meals?
Any child attending a North Somerset school whose parents or carers receive one or more of these benefits is entitled to receive free meals at school:

  • child tax credit, provided your annual income as assessed by HM Revenue and Customs does not exceed £16,190. If you receive working tax credit you will not be entitled unless you're in receipt of a four-week
    run-on
  • guarantee element of state pension credit
  • income support
  • income-based job seekers allowance
  • income-related employment support allowance
  • support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999

How do I apply for free school meals?

If you meet the eligibility criteria, please complete and save the  free school meals application form to your computer and then email the completed form to fsm@n-somerset.gov.uk.

When does free school meal entitlement start?

Entitlement usually starts from the date we receive your completed application form, providing you are in receipt of benefits on that date.

Is entitlement ever reviewed?

Please contact us if your circumstances change – for instance a change in address or your benefits. Your entitlement to free school meals is reviewed periodically, and if we don’t have your up to date details we may cancel your entitlement. If our checks show that you are no longer entitled we will contact you to let you know.

Do you need to know if my circumstances change?

If your circumstances change you should contact North Somerset's school admissions and transport team immediately.
